Configuring Your Computer Manually Without the Wizard

First we need to make sure you have at least 1 of this 5 items:

  1. Your Windows 95CD or diskettes
  2. Windows 98 CD
  3. 95 Upgrade CD
  4. 98 Upgrade CD
  5. OR, A Restore CD.

If you do not have one of the items above you should contact the sore or person you purchased your computer from and find out wqhy you do not have the CD, or if its noe labeled one of the above, what it is called.  Your operating system software is essential just about any upgrade you will do to your computer.  You may or may not need it to properly configure your computer to dial out to the Internet!

If you do have one of the 5 items liosted above please continue to follow the setup instrcutions listed below.

  • 1. Click on Start.
  • 2. Click on Settings
  • 3. Click on Control Panel.

 

4. Find the Network icon and double click it to open it.

 

5. Under the Configuration tab we need to make sure you have at least 3 components installed.  They will be listed in the large white window located between "The following network components are installed" and the Add, Remove, and Properties buttons.

  • A. Client for Microsoft Networks
  • B. Dial Up Adapter
  • C. TCP/IP or TCP/IP->Dial UP Adapter

 

6. If you have all 3 of these components already listed please skip to step number 8.   If you do not have all 3 of these components please follow the instructions under step 7.

7. Installing a missing component:

    Missing Client for Microsoft Networks

  • 1.Click on the Add button.
  • 2.Click on Client the click Add.
  • 3. On the left side under Manufacturers click on Microsoft, then on the right side click on Client for microsoft Networks, then clikc on OK.
  • 4. You have now added Client for Microsoft Networks.

    Missing Dial Up Adapter

  • 1. Click on the Add button.
  • 2. Click on Adapter button.
  • 3. On the left side under Manufacturers click on Microsoft, then on the right side click on Dial Up Adapter, then click on the OK.
  • 4. you have now added Dial Up Adapter.

    Missing TCP/IP or TCP?IP->Dial Up Adapter

  • 1. Click on the Add button.
  • 2. Click on Protocol the click Add.
  • 3. On the left side under Manufacturers click on Microsoft, then on the right side click on TCP/IP, then click on OK.
  • 4. You have now added TCP/IP.

8. Having all 3 components installed we now need to configure the TCP/IP or TCP/IP->Dial Up Adapter

  1. Click 1 time on the TCP/IP or TCP/IP->Dial UP Adapter to highlight it.
  2. Click on the Properties button.
  • For Windows 98 an alert window will appear telling you that you have asked to change the TCP/IP properties ect... you should click OK if you receive this message.

 

    3.  A new window appears titles TCP/IP Properties.

    4.  You sould start on the IP Address tab, make sure the dot is next to the Obtain IP Address Automatically.

 

    5.  Next, click on the DNS Configuration tab, make sure the dot is next to Disable DNS.

   

 

    6.  Next, click on the WINS Configuration tab, make sure the dot is next to Disable Wins Resolution.

 

    7.  Next, click on the Bindings tab, make sure that the only item that has a check in here is Client for Microsoft Networks.

 

    8.  Next, click on the Ok button at the bottom of this window.

    9.  You have now configure your TCP/IP settings.

9.  Click Ok at the bottom of the Network window and follow any prompts you receive from windows for inserting your CD or diskettes after it does this, if it does, Windows will then promt you to restart your computer for the new settings to take effect, click Yes to restart your computer.  If it does not promt you to restart your computer you should click on Start then Shut down then select Restart and click OK.

10.  After restarting your computer when windows starts up again you should close all windows that are open.

11.  Now you should find the My Computer icon, double click on it to open it.

 

12.In the My Computer window you shold see a Dial Up Networking icon, double click on it to open it.

 

After opening the Dial Up Networking icon 1 of 2 things will happen:

  • You will get a new window with an icon called Make New Connecion or..
  • You will get a new window titled Welcome to Dial Up Networking which has 3 buttons  Back, Next, and Cancel.  If you get this window please click on Cancel and you will then go to the window with the Make New Connection icon.

13.  Double click the Make New Connection icon.

 

14. Now a Make New Connection window opens up.  In the field for "Type a name for the computer you are dialing" you should put "IW Link" then click on the Next button.

15. In this window for the area code box put in your area code.  For the telephone number put in the local dial up for your area.  Then click on Next. If you do not know which is your local number;   please read our Local Numbers page to decide which is the number that is most local to your area. 

 

16.  Click on Finish.

17.  Now in the Dial Up Networking window you will see an icon for IW LinkRight-click (right side mouse button) one time on the IW Link icon and then Left-click on Properties.

18.  Now click on Server Types.

19.  Only 2 things should have a check mark in them Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP.  Please make sure to take out all the other check marks.

 

20.  Now click on the TCP/IP Settings button.

21.  At the top a dot should be next to Server Assigned IP Address, If it isnt please put one there.

22.  In the middle section of this window you need to place a dot next to Specify Name Server Addresses.  After you do this the 4 grey boxes below will turn white.

23.  You now need to change Primary DNS from:

        0.0.0.0

            to

        216.98.128.70

24.  Now you need to change Secondary DNS from

        0.0.0.0

             to

        216.98.138.70

25.  Click the OK button until you get to the Dial Up Networking window.

26.  Now you need to right click one time on the IW Link icon and then click on the option for Create Shortcut.

 

After you do this a new window pops up saying that Windows can not create a shortcut here...Click  on Yes for this message .

27.  Close the Dial up Networking window and then the My Computer window if it is still open.

28.  Your computer is now configured to log on to the internet with our service!

29.  In order to connect to our service and surf the net follow the steps below.

  • Double click the Shortcut to IW Link
  • Type in your Username and Password in all lower case letters.
  • Click on the Connect button.

 

After you establish a connection you should then double click on your browser to start using the internet.  Your browser is either Microsoft Interenet Exlorer or Netscape Navigator/Communicator.  This icons may be called "The Internet"  "Internet Explorer" "Netscape Navigator" or "Netscape Communicator"  If you are not able to find an icon with one of the names above try this:  Click on Start then Programs then you should have a listing for Internet Explorer or Netscape.  If you open those listings you will then find the browser,  If you do not have those listings please visit Browsers.com and download the browser of your choice.
